York Racecourse
York Racecourse is a horse racing venue in York, North Yorkshire, England. It is the third biggest racecourse in Britain in terms of total prize money offered, second only to Ascot in terms of prize money offered per meeting. It attracts around 350,000 racegoers per year and hosts three Group 1 races – The Juddmonte International Stakes, The Nunthorpe Stakes, and The Yorkshire Oaks. It is located in the south-west of the city, just off of Great Central Road - next to British Chocolate Shop Ltd., The Chocolate Works. It's situated on an expanse of land which has been known since pre-medieval times as The Racecourse, from the Anglo-Saxon "race" meaning a course for horses and "kurh" meaning a protective ridge or wall. For this reason, still sometimes referred to as "The Racecourse".
